Football Manager 2026 is out, and it is the biggest change to the series in years. After the cancellation of FM25 (Sports Interactive pulled it just before launch when studio director Miles Jacobson sat down to play an early build and ‘literally couldn’t find things in my own game’), the team had two full years to rebuild the game from scratch.

FM26 launched on 4 November 2025 on the Unity engine, with women’s football, a Premier League licence, and dual-formation tactics. Here is everything you need to know.

FM26 Early Access: How the Advanced Access Beta Worked?

FM26 Early Access: How the Advanced Access Beta Worked

For the first time branded as ‘Advanced Access’ (previously called Early Access or Beta), FM26 gave pre-purchasers approximately two weeks of play time before the full release. The Advanced Access Beta went live on Thursday, 23 October 2025 and ran until the full game launched on 4 November.

  • Who got it: Players who pre-purchased FM26 through Steam, Epic Games, or approved SEGA partner retailers
  • What it included: The full game in near-final form, all game modes, features, and content
  • Platform: PC only. No Advanced Access for console, Switch, or mobile
  • Save game compatibility: Careers started in Advanced Access carried over to the full release

The Advanced Access period was notable for generating the most community discussion in FM history, primarily because of the new UI — which Miles Jacobson later acknowledged had significant navigation problems and has since committed to improving in FM27.

FM26’s Biggest New Features – Everything That Changed

1. The Unity Engine – FM’s Biggest Visual Leap in 20 Years

FM26 is the first Football Manager game built on the Unity engine. The previous OGRE engine had powered every FM game for over two decades. The switch delivers: higher-quality graphics across match day, stadiums, and player models; hundreds of new volumetric animations captured from real-life matches using Hawk-Eye technology; improved lighting, weather effects, and pitch surfaces; and smoother AI decision-making and dribbling mechanics.

Player reaction has been mixed: most agree the match engine looks better than any previous FM, but the new UI drew criticism for being harder to navigate. Jacobson addressed this directly: ‘I literally sat there and just couldn’t find things in my own game…

For our next release, we’ve got a clear set of priorities, informed by the recurring pain points you’ve raised. Immersion is the main element we’re focused on.’

2. Dual Formation System – The Biggest Tactical Change in FM History

FM26 introduces a dual-formation tactical system that mirrors how elite modern managers approach the game. For the first time, you can set separate formations and player roles for ‘In Possession’ and ‘Out of Possession’ phases. This means you can set up in a 4-3-3 when your team has the ball and automatically switch to a 5-4-1 defensive block when you lose it, all within a single tactic.

Save game compatibility note: careers transferred from FM24 or FM23 will need to manually set up dual formations for existing tactics, as the feature cannot be auto-populated from older data.

3. Women’s Football – Fully Integrated for the First Time

FM26 adds women’s football to the core game with 14 playable leagues across 11 nations, a database of over 36,000 female players and 4,000+ clubs. This is not a bolt-on mode, it is fully integrated, meaning you can manage both men’s and women’s teams within the same save, apply for women’s management jobs from any point in your career, and experience the full transfer and contract system across both.

Sports Interactive worked with players, managers, clubs, and organisations worldwide to deliver authentic representation. Nine new women’s football licensors were signed to accompany the base game.

4. Premier League Licence – Full Kits, Badges & Player Photos

FM26 is the first Football Manager in years to feature the official Premier League licence, following a multi-year partnership signed in June 2024. All 20 Premier League clubs now have official logos, kits, and player likenesses in the game. The trailer placed heavy emphasis on this partnership, and it was one of the most celebrated features among the FM community.

5. FIFA World Cup 2026 Licence

FM26 also secured a partnership with FIFA, making it the only football management game with the official FIFA World Cup 2026 licence. International Management, using this licenc, was added via a major content update on 27 May 2026, with a second update planned for June 2026 to finalise licensed assets including official 26-man World Cup squads. FM26 Mobile (Netflix exclusive) included World Cup management from its launch day.

6. Revamped UI – The Portal, FMPedia, and New Navigation

The classic sidebar navigation is gone. FM26 replaces it with a top navigation bar, a central ‘Portal’ hub page, a new tile-and-card interface system, and FMPedia, an in-game knowledge base for rules, tactics, and player information. The new Search function was also significantly upgraded.

Community verdict: the Portal concept is sound, but first-iteration navigation has been the most criticised element of FM26. SI has committed to UI improvements as the top priority for FM27.

Features Removed from FM26

  • FEATURES NOT IN FM26 (being addressed in FM27 or future updates):
  • Touchline Shouts: Removed entirely, not returning in FM26

  • Save game: FM25 saves NOT compatible (FM25 was cancelled). FM24 and FM23 saves ARE compatible.

What Players Are Saying About FM26?

What Players Are Saying About FM26

Based on verified buyer reviews on idealo.co.uk and Steam:

  • Match engine: ‘The switch to the Unity engine is a graphical leap.’ Most players agree the visual upgrade is real, smoother animations, better lighting, and more immersive matchdays.
  • Tactical depth: ‘The with/without ball roles are top-notch.’ The dual formation system is the most-praised gameplay feature among experienced FM players.
  • UI criticism: ‘A bit clumsy at times.’ The new interface is the most divisive change, praised for its ambition but criticised for its early execution.
  • Women’s football: Early reviews describe it as seamlessly integrated and meaningfully different from men’s football in terms of transfer markets and player development curves.
  • Bugs: ‘Technically it’s not running completely smoothly yet.’ FM26 launched with more bugs than recent editions, reflecting the scale of the rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did FM26 come out?

Football Manager 2026 was officially released on 4 November 2025 at 16:00 GMT for PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox. Nintendo Switch (FM26 Touch) followed on 4 December 2025. Advanced Access for pre-purchasers began on 23 October 2025.

How much does FM26 cost in the UK?

The RRP is £49.99 for PC/Mac. FM26 went on a 50% sale on Steam in June 2026, bringing it to approximately £24.99. Key resellers such as CDKeys and GAMIVO offer it from around £17–20. FM26 Mobile is free with any Netflix subscription.

Is FM26 on Game Pass?

FM26 Console (PS5 and Xbox versions) was confirmed as available on Xbox Game Pass at launch. Check the Microsoft Store or Game Pass app for current availability.

What is the FM26 Advanced Access Beta?

Advanced Access is FM26’s pre-release phase, available to players who pre-purchased the game. It began on 23 October 2025 — approximately two weeks before the 4 November full release. It is PC-only, includes the full game in near-final form, and save files carry over to the full release.

Can I transfer my FM24 save to FM26?

Yes. FM26 supports save game compatibility from FM24 and FM23. FM25 saves are not compatible because FM25 was cancelled before release.

Why was FM25 cancelled?

Sports Interactive cancelled FM25 in November 2024 — just before its planned launch — because studio director Miles Jacobson played an early build and found it unplayable. He told The Athletic he ‘literally couldn’t find things in my own game’ and decided it could not be released. The team used the extra development time to rebuild FM26 from the ground up on the Unity engine.
