Is Skate 4 Out? Early Access Explained

Yes, Skate 4 is playable right now, for free. EA and developer Full Circle launched the game into Early Access on 16 September 2025, ending a 15-year gap since Skate 3 (2010).
However, this is not the full game. Early Access is Full Circle’s approach to building the game live, with player feedback shaping what comes next.
Full Circle described the Early Access launch as ‘the start of our live service, not a sequel, remake, or remaster. It’s the evolution of the Skate franchise.’
The game requires an always-online internet connection and has no offline mode, a decision that attracted significant criticism from players who noted the fate of The Crew, an always-online EA racing game whose servers were shut down in 2024, rendering it permanently unplayable.
Skate 4 Full Release Date: When Will It Leave Early Access?
There is no official full release date for Skate 4 as of June 2026. Full Circle’s roadmap described spending ‘at least six months’ in Early Access, adding content, listening to feedback, and polishing the game.
Given the Early Access launched in September 2025, that six-month minimum has now passed, but the developers have not announced a full release window.
PCGamesN and GamesRadar both estimate the full game will launch in late 2026, based on the roadmap’s stated development pace and the current season schedule running to at least November 2026 (Season 5 runs until November 17, 2026).
Our estimate aligns: the full release is most likely Q4 2026 at the earliest.
FULL RELEASE DATE ESTIMATE: Q4 2026 (October–November 2026)
This is an estimate based on the Early Access roadmap. Full Circle has NOT confirmed a date.
Season 5 runs until 17 November 2026 the full release will likely follow shortly after.
Mobile (iOS/Android) will launch after the full PC/console release.

What Is San Vansterdam?
San Vansterdam is the name of Skate 4’s open world city, described by producer Cuz Parry as ‘a sister city to San Vanelona,’ the setting from the first two Skate games.
The city is a continuously evolving skateboarding sandbox designed for multiplayer. Activities in the city rotate and change over time, including challenges (short solo experiences), pop-ups (dynamic community events around the city), and throwdowns (impromptu competitive trick gatherings).
The city runs on the Frostbite engine, the same engine EA uses for FIFA and Battlefield and has received graphical improvements throughout the Early Access period.
Season 4 includes reworked lighting across the entire city and a new Stadium area that opened for Season 4 Premium Pass holders on June 2, with open access from July 21.
Is Skate 4 Any Good? Honest Assessment

What Critics Said at Early Access Launch?
Luke Reilly of IGN gave Skate 4 a 4 out of 10 at Early Access launch, delivering the most notable critical assessment of the game.
His criticisms covered: the campaign’s AI companion and poor dialogue; lack of objective variety; the game’s focus on encouraging microtransaction spending on in-game currency (‘San Van bucks’); lengthy and poorly paced tutorial missions; a city that felt ‘too small and lifeless’; and character designs that reminded him negatively of The Sims.
The game was nominated for Best Early Access Game at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025 despite the mixed reviews, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for the series’ return, even if the execution disappointed on day one.
What Players Say in 2026?
Community sentiment has improved significantly since the September 2025 launch. The core trick system, the revamped Flick-It analogue stick mechanic, is widely praised as capturing the feel of the original games. Season content updates have added meaningful improvements.
The main persistent criticisms remain: the always-online requirement, the aggressive cosmetic monetisation, the absence of an offline mode, and the slow pace of major content additions.
Key Controversies
- No offline mode: Full Circle confirmed in April 2025 that the game will never have an offline mode. This drew comparisons to The Crew, whose server closure permanently destroyed players’ libraries. EA stated there would be no pay-to-win mechanics or locked map areas, but the online-only decision remains a sticking point.
- Microtransactions: The in-game ‘San Van bucks’ currency and the skate. Premium Pass attracted criticism during Early Access. Full Circle stated they added microtransactions early to establish a ‘positive experience when purchasing’ though sceptics argued it was to maximise revenue during the honeymoon period.
- PC controller-only: Mouse and keyboard are not currently supported on PC, requiring a controller, an unusual restriction for a PC game.
